History of Golden Ball WinesThe Golden Ball is located in an area as rich in history as it once was in gold. It was the first piece of Crown Land sold off by the government in the Everton parish in 1857. Purchased by Isaac Phillips, The Golden Ball was soon turned into a hotel frequented by passing travellers. Located at the bottom of the steep ascent into Beechworth, The Golden Ball was the perfect spot on which to open a hotel. It soon became a popular place to stop for travellers making their way to the goldfields. In the days when miners lined the creeks panning for gold the hotel was also known as the Honeymooners Inn. Its regular supply of water and other liquid refreshments made it an ideal place to regroup before beginning the arduous climb into Beechworth. Over the years The Golden Ball has changed hands on many occasions, but has always maintained an important historical significance to the area. The original three stone rooms still form the centre of the current residence. Having been purchased by the McLaurin family in 1980, the grape vines were planted in 1996. Janine and James McLaurin now own and operate The Golden Ball, priding themselves on producing quality wines that are entirely crafted from their property. Still set alongside the picturesque weeping willows lining the nearby creek, The Golden Ball remains a constant reminder of the colourful history of the region. |
